How To Start A Blog (for writers)

Today's post is for writers totally new to blogging, about to start a blog, or feeling uncertain with their current blog.

Questions to Ask Before You Start: i said this in yesterday's post)

*What will distinguish your blog? *What’s your unique angle? Most successful blogs have a very specific angle, topic, or audience.
*What is your purpose?
*What are your goals?

(The more time you spend blogging, the more value you build for readers over time)

There is one problem: You need patience; you must be willing to commit to blogging for more than a year ( I told you i started Blogging in 2013 I regret not taking it seriously then It took me this long to find my voice and the niche that I felt most strongly about, where I believed I had a unique contribution to make.)
One more thing before you start a blog, you need to think about who’ll send you traffic. Identify the notable community players, the people who you’ll build relationships with.

The important Components of Your Blog
Aside from the blog posts, there are other things you need to put into consideration. your blogs needs to have the following:

*Header/banner + tagline:- This will tell new visitors what your blog is about and what they stand to gain from it.

*About page or bio:- i will not advice. A writer who cares about fame to blog like i do( Anonymously,I am sure not every of my readers knows my true i dentity) it is always good to tell your readers more about the person behind the writing. Don’t make them search for this. I recommend creating a separate and detailed page that also includes contact information.

*Calendar or archive. New readers on your blog may want to look around in your blog. Make it easy for them to do so. I'll advice you to create a sidebar that tells readers what your most popular posts are.

*Comment box: With an easy-to-use comment system you will grow your blog and build strong relationships. Major blogging platforms (like WordPress) can help your comment system with an automatically eliminate spam activity.

*Sharing functionality. Make it easy for people to share your posts on Facebook, Twitter (or just about anywhere else) through plug-ins like
AddThis.

*Readability. If your blog or site is meant to be read, then don’t make readability hard by making the text too small, too tight or white type on a black background. Also Be aware that to many pop-ups, ads, or bad layout can also block readability and drive readers elsewhere.

Now For Each Post (put these suggestions into consideration)

*Improve your headlines. Ask yourself this questions:
"If people
saw ONLY the headline (On Facebook or Twitter), would they feel compelled to click on it? Is it specific?"
Is it intriguing or provocative?
Does it offer a benefit?
Is it timely or relevant?
Why will people click on the headline?
Remember, Sometimes that is only thing some people see when they’re surfing online.
Improve your readability. Consider adding more paragraphs,
*bulleted lists
* numbered lists
*images
*subheadings
*quotes or whatever it takes to make your posts more attractive. Reading online is not the same as reading offline. If your post is very long, consider breaking it up into a series. [This “rule” gets broken all the time successfully, but it requires the right readership and great content, among other things.]

(I was gonna say to be continued when that came up) So tomorrow we will continue with "How To Improve You Discoverabilty" And How To Chose Your Blogging Platform"

Thanks for reading :)

remember to comment and share.

Why Every Writers Should Own A Blog

I started blogging in the year 2013. Then i started it because i just want to own a blog(not a good reason) then i was not sure if i should take writing as a career. In 2014 created another blog Then i just want to own a writer's blog(a good reason with a bad approach) then i was sure writing is what i want to do. The blog failed in 2014 because all i do is post my works without sharing the posts(lack of marketing strategy)

Now before you start a blog there are few questions you need to ask yourself:

Now back to the topic. Why every writer should own a blog. I will be using myself as a case study

Blogging helped me find my calling. If I had started earlier, I would’ve gotten published in magazines faster and would’ve written more books by now.
Reason? Because blogging taught me how to practice, how to edit, and how to write for a deadline. But even if it didn’t launch my writing career (which it did), I wish i started Blogging earlier.

Here are the reasons why I wish i started Blogging earlier
1. Blogging teaches you discipline. Having to sit down once a day or once week and write is an important skill.
2. Blogging teaches you self-examination . Blogging has helped me understand myself and my place in the world.
3. Blogging gives you a voice. We all have something to say, even if we don’t think of ourselves as writers or speakers. A blog gives you a place, free from censorship and criticism, to express your mind and find other people who connect with what you believe.

In this generation where we can reach the world without having to open our front doors. When we can publish ourselves and share our best thoughts with the world: when we can step onstage at an open Mic event (Arthub, chill and relax and many more) and reach a lot of people or post a video on Youtube that gets shared on another continent or write a blog post that touches just one other soul.

Are you ready to take your career to the next level start a blog now.

Ok you need help starting you blog don't worry i will be dropping post on Blogging (strictly for writers) for the next few month

Random Thoughts: Being A Woman.

By Unique.

" Ssh, don't talk about sex that way, you're a woman ."
"Close your legs, sit well, you're a woman "
" Don't dream too big, you know you're a woman "
" Don't buy that car or else you want to chase potential husbands away."

As a young girl taking her first steps into womanhood, I'm caught in between worlds. I often find myself struggling in a world made up of conflicting messages about who a girl is and her role in the society. Last year, when I was in the village, something happened that irked the very core of my being.
It was on Christmas day, I just finished consuming a plate of well prepared Afang soup and fufu and I decided to take a stroll, maybe attend the ongoing Christmas festival, hang out with friends and catch some fun after all, it was Christmas.
I changed my clothes, applied my lipstick then went ahead to inform Mom. She ended up saying, "You're a girl, leave this festival thing to the matured ones".
I reminded her that my kid brother left home immediately after church service and her reply was, "He is a man, his own is different".
Isn't that what I am talking of here?

Why do society think men can follow their dreams, behave the way they like while women are expected to stay in the background?
Even in this 21st century, women are excluded from discussions about war and certain national issues and are given roles with issues that has to do with health and family. Even some families feel incomplete without a male child.
The most annoying part is when paid service providers end up saying,"Leave am, na woman or I get her type for house", even when they are at fault. And I'm like, "so bloody what?"
"Cause you have my type at home or because I am a lady gives you enough reasons to hold me like a pinch of salt while expecting me to carry you like a bag of fufu?"
Well, let me tell you an old story in a new way. Let's see how well you know it.
I'm an easy going person, to me as long as you do your job properly, speak in a neutral tone and understand that you're providing a service, while I am paying for it, there will be no plight. Sometime ago, I was inside a bus heading to point C, so I paid the driver to take me to point C. There were other passengers in the bus as well, going to point B. The driver seeing that most of the passengers were stopping at Point B, asked me to stop there also that he couldn't drive me alone all the way to point C. During this minute, the driver was extremely rude and commented in a hostile tone,"Come down here oh, I no fit carry only you go there o, the place no even far, just trek small, you go soon reach" I think you can get the point of the story already .I was in a pretty good mood then, so it didn't affect me like upset me but it got me thinking," what if I was a guy, will he have said that in such a rude way?"

Why do society treat women as property?

To be continued....

Flash Fiction Friday

The Chase

On hearing this, Adamu’s legs got to work. Slow at first, then faster and faster, like a cheetah he went:

Sorrow fueled his pain,
pain fueled his anger;
and anger fueled his legs.

Blood flowed into his eyes, and turned them red. His incisors turned to fangs, his eyelashes overgrew; his breath sounded like a woof. Adamu, does not know what he will do when he catch-up with Bala, but catching him is vital.
Ere the chase, Adamu meet his mother in a pool of blood, when he entered his hut. “Bala, Dongari’s head guard” she muttered, then she died.
Upon this statement, his rectangular doorway lost its outlines as his eyes scanned the outside perimeter from their oval posts.
He spotted a boy under the Dongoyaro, tree in his compound “kai! Abul, have you seen Dongari’s head guard?” He asked in furious Hausa, as he stormed out of his hut. “Yes, he went that way” the boy said pointing at a brownish path.
Bala, became Adamu’s enemy, the day Adamu, defeated him in the village wrestling championship.
After a long chase, Adamu, caught Bala’s neck and pinned him to a tree. “Ah! Adamu, you are not human; the villagers must hear this.” Bala, said (adding salt to his injury). Adamu’s fingers, curled into claws and straight into Bala’s neck they went. Like a farmer harvesting carrot he pulled out Bala’s throat.
This is a secret, only his mother knows. she told him he is like that because his father, who was a hunter killed a pregnant hyena the night before his birth. The hyena cursed him.
Just then the bush behind him rustled, with the fear that he may need to commit murder again, he turned and saw Dongo, his dog panting; he was not alone on the chase.

Is Harry Potter Back?

Nine years after J K Rowling’s last Harry Potter novel😍, the world will be seeing a new one very soon! That’s right, Harry Potter is BACK😎! The 8th Potter story should be published worldwide in July. The book, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child😈,” will probably be in Two parts. A script version of the sold-out London play, will be published in a physical book form in North America and Britain🇬🇧 and as a digital ebook globally. The book will read like a play📑 rather than a narrative novel. The story is set 19 years after the Deathly Hallows💍 book and features a grown-up Potter👨 as an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic🏤 and father of 3. Potter is shown struggling “with a past that refuse to stay where it belongs,” said the publishers. Can't wait❗

The Importance Of Maintaining A Good Online Presence

As a writer, maintaining a good online presence is an absolute necessity. Successful writing career are often built or broken by reputation.
So as a writer, you may be asking yourself, why should I be careful with what I put out there on the Internet? Here are several reasons you should have a good, professional online presence:

*Audience Building:
*Marketing
*Skill Development
*Networking

*Audience Building:
A Creative Writing Skill, is a skill that requires the presence of an audience. In this generation, audiences have moved from; kids gathered around an older individual listening to moonlit stories. Nowadays, with the advent of technology, there is an audience present everywhere.
The 21st century writer is not needed to be physically present to tell his/her story. There are several social media tools that have been developed in recent times; the blogging sites like Blogspot, Wordpress micro blogging sites such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
It has become somewhat mandatory for a writer to have an online presence to remain relevant to his/her followers.
For a blogging writer, his/her blogs will be their major form of online presence where they can share their pieces with the rest of the world. With the share buttons, their followers can share the pieces to their friends all over other platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Online presence keeps a writer relevant to his/her followers.

NOTE:
In this generation, a "good" writer that maintains a good online presence, is sure to make huge sales when he publishes a book more than that "better" writer that has got no presence online.

*MARKETING to be continued tomorrow stay glued.

The Revolution Of Spoken Word Poetry In Nigeria

Guest post By Mobola Oluwapelumi

It's no news that poetry has diverse definitions. If two poets were asked to tell what poetry is to them, there's no doubt each will defines poetry in respect to their views and understanding. Although poetry has no definite definition every poets however understood one thing: poetry is the expression of feelings and ideals, it uses specialized language, and it's ambiguous. As there's no specified definition for poetry so also nobody knows, who pioneer poetry? Meanwhile, It shouldn't go without notice, an ardent research shows that our forefathers knew poetry. Their poetry can be perceived in folklores, moonlight stories, songs, and talking drums as portrayed by Efua. T. Sutherland in his book "The Marriage of Anansewa" and as can be found in the work of the early stage theater practitioners like Baba Ogunde, Oyin Adejobi, Shola Ogunsola and the like whose performances are much embedded in talking drums after independence. As it's widely known poetry is one of the varying works of art which in its form encompasses many other forms. Spoken word poetry is one of this form. Spoken word poetry is one of the oldest forms of poetry that can be found anywhere in Africa and Nigeria in particular. In the olden days, there are many great orators, drum beaters, and flute players who usually perform for the kings, chiefs, and wealthy people in the village. A good example is "ewi kike" which is very rampant in the southern part of Nigeria. As recorded, it's very rich in imagery, symbolism, wordplays, rhythms, and gestures by the performer(akewi). This and the rests can be termed the first ever spoken word events to exist in Nigeria. However, as time elapsed colonization set in, democracy follows so is modernization, art of reading and writing is in full bloom. Many things changed, so is our perspectives. Has poetry now in oblivion? And especially spoken word poetry which can be considered as part of African cultural heritage.

When Nigeria was liberated we embraced reading and writing. So instead of performing poetry, we only have them written on pages of books. There are many award winning writers today who had written many poems to their names but not one is fit for performance. They lacked the rudiments for a spoken word poem (imagery, pun, wordplays, rhythms, probably rhyme and symbolism) as reading is not same as performing in which case the poem has to aid the performer. It took many years for Nigeria to get her groove back in the spoken word industry as revealed by the prolific famous writer and spoken word poet Sage Hasson in an interview " the very first time I did spoken-word poetry was in the 80’s. I had seen this guy called Muhtar Baruka, a Jamaican. He was the first spoken-word poet I ever saw. He came on stage and was like ‘aint no good to live in a white man country too long, ’ and I asked myself, ‘what is he doing?! ’ Everybody else was singing reggae, but here he was, rapping in this funny way. So, that’s when I started it, but I did it in the Jamaican patois. I attempted to do it in 2002, but I didn’t think Nigerians would like it so I shelved it and focused on journalism. However when I resumed in 2005, I was certain without a doubt that it was going to work because I knew God told me to do it, in fact I don’t think I have done everything that I could have done with spoken-word poetry." All thanks to Sage Hassan who many considered the Messiah who safe spoken word poetry from itself and from receding to back water forever.

When spoken word poetry shot into limelight, young writers including the adults felt a new dimension in their passion for poetry; to take it to stage. Now almost every poets and poetess love their word spoken. Spoken word groups and promoters sprang up, events and competitions were organized, and we can say it's becoming a success judging by the amounts of turn outs. Today many outstanding spoken word artiste, male and female grace the stages. However, the story doesn't end there. The majority of Nigerians especially those at the consumer end are yet take spoken word poetry seriously and so is the fund. Backbone of every business is 85% of finance. Spoken word industry needs more sponsors to organize events, encourage the artistes, and create more awareness in the society.

Uhm…well, allow me to mount this prophetic podium and I say with grace, in future spoken word will become a commodity that every home wouldn't do without. I bet that's the dream of every soul that's stake in this industry- the organizers, the promoters, the performers, and us the well wishers. Amen.
